Uniprint Technote: JAWS® Support for Pharos Station

Overview

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Uniprint supports the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) v14 for Windows screen reader from Freedom Scientific. The integration with the JAWS Screen Reader allows blind and visually impaired users to manage their own print jobs using the Pharos Station. Using JAWS® software, relevant information from the Pharos Station screen is read aloud to users; users can then accomplish the required actions by using the keyboard.

At a Pharos Station, JAWS® guides the user by speaking the relevant information on the Welcome screen, Logon screen, and Releasing Print Jobs screen. This enables users to create a new account and pay for and release their print jobs.

Supported Uniprint Suite versions: Uniprint Suite 9.0 R2, Uniprint 9.1

Supported JAWS® versions: The integration is supported for JAWS 14.0

Supported Operating Systems: This integration is currently supported on Microsoft® Windows XP and Microsoft® Windows 7.

The default script and configuration for JAWS can make the Pharos Station ADA compliant, but it does not make it sufficiently usable. For this reason, Pharos provides customized JAWS script and configuration files to improve usability. The following scripts and configuration files are provided for JAWS to support the Pharos Station:

  • Pstation.JSB (required)
  • Pstation.JCF (required)
  • PStation.ini (optional)

Installation and Configuration

Configuring JAWS software to work with Pharos Station involves the following steps:

  1. Install the JAWS screen reader software on all computers running the Pharos Station
  2. Copy the JAWS script and configuration files to the recommended location.

Installing Pharos Stations

To install the Pharos Station, simply run the executable PharosStationInstaller.exe file (from the Pharos\Client Installers directory) on each computer where you want to install the Pharos Station component.

Installing JAWS Screen Reader

Purchase the JAWS screen reader from Freedom Scientific and install it on the machine running the Pharos Stations.

JAWS Screen Reader software comes with its own Installation Manual. Refer to the JAWS Installation Guide for detailed information on how to install JAWS software. If assistance is required, contact your JAWS support channel.

Configuring JAWS Screen Reader for Pharos Station

After you have installed Pharos Station and the JAWS software, you must configure JAWS to work with the Pharos Station.

To configure JAWS to work with these Pharos components, copy the files Pstation.JSB (required), Pstation.JCF (required), PStation.ini (optional) to the following path:

  • On machines running Windows 7 - C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\14.0\SETTINGS\enu
  • On machines running Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\14.0\Settings\enu

After copying the appropriate files, you can test the JAWS integration:

  1. Start the JAWS software.
  2. Start the Pharos Station.
  3. JAWS should begin reading aloud information from the Pharos Station.

Use Cases

Card reader is NOT attached to a Pharos Station

  1. Copy the two files, Pstation.JSB and Pstation.JCF to the path C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\14.0\SETTINGS\enu on Windows 7 and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\14.0\Settings\enu on Windows XP.
  2. JAWS guides the user by reading aloud the information on the Welcome screen, Logon screen, and Releasing Print Jobs screen.

JAWS supports the Print Release functionality of Pharos Station. It does not support SignUp (Reserve) and Pharos Account maintenance functionalities (ex. creating account).

Card reader IS attached to a Pharos Station

There are some subtle differences between reading aloud information when a card reader is attached and without a card reader attached to a Pharos Station.

  1. Copy the three files, Pstation.JSB, Pstation.JCF, and Pstation.ini provided by Pharos to the path C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\14.0\SETTINGS\enu on Windows 7 and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\14.0\Settings\enu on Windows XP.
  2. If a card reader is attached to a Pharos Station, we recommend including the PStation.ini file. The PStation.ini file tells the JAWS integration whether or not a card reader is attached to the Pharos Station. Set the value for the "CardReader" field to 1 if a card reader is attached.

The PStation.ini file also provides the Welcome Screen message that is read aloud by JAWS when the Pharos Station Welcome screen is displayed. You can change the welcome message by editing the value of the "WelcomeScreenMessage" field.

The Pstation.ini file has two sections, as specified below.

    [PStationType]

    CardReader=1

    [PStationWelcomeMessage]

    WelcomeScreenMessage="Please insert your card"

The value assigned to ‘WelcomeScreenMessage’ is read aloud by JAWS when the Welcome screen is displayed.

Notes after upgrading from JAWS 9.0 to JAWS 14.0

  • If you find the Pharos custom scripts in the following folder after upgrading from JAWS 9.0 to JAWS 14.0, you must delete them or update them with the new custom script files that came with the latest JAWS package provided by Pharos.
    • On machines running Windows 7 - C:\Users\<Current User>\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\14.0\Settings\enu
    • On machines running Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\<Current User>\Application Data\FreedomScientific\JAWS\14.0\Settings\enu
  • JAWS configuration manager may not use the settings of the configuration file Pstation.jcf. This configuration file allows JAWS to read graphics with labels only. However, there may be instances where the file fails and may read aloud all the graphic elements on the screen. If this happens, you may have to manually set the configuration as specified below:
    1. From the Utilities menu, open the Settings Center.
    2. From the Application drop-down list, select Pstation.
    3. Select and expand the Graphics and Symbols option.
    4. In the Graphic Verbosity, select Labelled Graphics.
