Uniprint Technote: JAWS Support for Popup Client

Overview

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Uniprint 9.0 R2 or greater supports v15, v16, an v2020 of the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) for Windows screen reader from Freedom Scientific. The integration with the JAWS Screen Reader allows blind and visually impaired users to manage their own print jobs using the Popup Client. Using JAWS® software, relevant information from the Popup Client screen is read aloud to users; users can then accomplish the required actions by using the keyboard.

At a Popup Client, JAWS guides the user by speaking the relevant information, which includes the username, password, job name, custom questions, and standard job information (i.e. Cost Information and Cost Acceptance). Information from Cost Centers is not included in the script.

Supported Uniprint Suite versions: Uniprint Suite 9.0 R2, Uniprint 9.1

Supported JAWS® versions: The integration is supported for JAWS 15.0, JAWS 16.0, and JAWS 2020

Supported Operating Systems: This integration is currently supported on Microsoft® Windows 7, Microsoft® Windows 8, Microsoft® Windows 8.1, Windows 10.

The default script and configuration for JAWS can make the Pharos Popup Client ADA compliant, but it does not make it sufficiently usable. For this reason, Pharos provides customized JAWS script and configuration files to improve usability. The following scripts and configuration files are provided for JAWS to support the Pharos Popup Client:

  • POPUPCLI.JSS
  • POPUPCLI.JCF
  • POPUPCLI.jsb

Installation and Configuration

Configuring JAWS software to work with Popup Clients involves the following steps:

  1. Install the JAWS screen reader software on all computers running the Popup Client.
  2. Copy the JAWS script and configuration files to the recommended location.

Installing Popup Clients

The Popup Client is installed using Pharos install packages. For more information on how to install Popup clients, refer to the "Uniprint Planning and Installation Guide" in the Documentation folder of the Pharos disk image.

Installing JAWS Screen Reader

Purchase the JAWS screen reader from Freedom Scientific and install it on the machine running the Pharos Popup Client.

JAWS Screen Reader software comes with its own Installation Manual. Refer to the JAWS Installation Guide for detailed information on how to install JAWS software. If assistance is required, contact your JAWS support channel.

Configuring JAWS Screen Reader for Popup Client

After you have installed a Popup Client and the JAWS software, you must configure JAWS to work with the Popup Client.

To configure JAWS to work with these Pharos components, copy the files (POPUPCLI.JSS, POPUPCLI.jsb and POPUPCLI.JCF) to the following location on machines running Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1:

  • For JAWS 2020, copy POPUPCLI.JCF to C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2020\SETTINGS\enu and the other files to C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2020\Scripts\enu.
  • For JAWS 15.0 - C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\15.0\SETTINGS\enu
  • For JAWS 16.0 - C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\16.0\SETTINGS\enu

After copying the appropriate files, you can test the JAWS integration:

  1. Start the JAWS software.
  2. Start the Popup Client.
  3. JAWS should begin reading aloud information from the Pharos Popup Client.

For JAWS to read the Cost Information message (which shows the cost of the job and the number of pages) on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, you must press the Windows logo key + V key together.
