Technotes

Pharos TechNotes are short printable documents that offer technical information about specific areas of the Pharos system.

TechNote: Updating Uniprint 9.1 Servers with No Internet Connection (Updated for SP1)

The Updater Service allows administrators to easily update their Uniprint system with the latest hotfixes, service packs, or Pharos server updates. The Updater Service requires an internet connection to download updates from the Pharos cloud (hosted within Amazon Web Services). If your Pharos servers are not connected to the internet, you can update your system by manually downloading the Updater Service and the update packages from the Pharos Community website.

This document provides instructions on how to update your Uniprint servers with no Internet connection.

Technote: Uniprint Load Balancing (New for SP1)

This document provides instructions on how to configure HAProxy for Uniprint 9.1 as well as the changes required to the Uniprint components for load balancing to work. Using the information in this document, you should be able to configure other load balancers, if they can do both layer 7 (app) and layer 4 (TCP) type load balancing.

TechNote: Card Registration

Card Registration allows users to create their own user account from Network Terminals using a card. This document shows how to configure card registration.

TechNote: Checking Device Status

Uniprint checks the status of a device before sending jobs to it. This is to ensure that jobs are forwarded only to "online” devices. This document details how Uniprint determines the status of a device using the SNMP protocol in Uniprint.

Technote: Configuring Print Center to use SSO (Updated March 2019)

Pharos Print Center (v3.6.1 or later) adds support for Single Sign-on (SSO). This document covers how to update your Uniprint servers for SSO and configure Print Center to use SSO.

With SSO, users can log in to Print Center using their credentials from an identity provider. When a user logs into Print Center, they are redirected to the identity provider’s login page, rather than to the Print Center website and then redirected back to Print Center and logged on with their account.

TechNote: Grants (Updated for SP1)

This document provides instructions on how to set up Grants. A Grant is a special type of Cost Center. However, unlike Cost Centers, Grants can either have a budget limit or an expiry date. Grants will no longer be available to users for charging if either the budget limit is exhausted or the Grant has expired.

TechNote: Guest Cards

The Guest Card feature allows non-authenticated users (e.g. guest users, visitors) to use printing and copying resources, without needing actual user accounts in the Pharos systems or in an external directory system. This document provides you with the instructions for configuring the Guest Card feature.

TechNote: Internationalization

This document provides you with the instructions for configuring your Uniprint Server for non-English installations. It also includes instructions on how to localize Pharos Popup Client and Pharos Station (Print Station) in any of the supported languages (French, Italian, German, and Spanish).

TechNote: Internationalization (Arabic Language Support)

This document includes instructions on how to localize the Pharos Popup Client in the Arabic language.

TechNote: Pharos Print Center Credit Card Gateway (Updated 6-19)

Pharos Uniprint offers an optional Credit Card Gateway that will allow a user to securely add funds to their Pharos account using their credit card, debit card, or PayPal™ account via the Pharos Print Center. To provide this feature, the Print Center integrates with the PayPal™ payment gateway service, which is one of the most widely used payment gateway services in the world today.

TechNote: Pharos Print Center Deployment Strategy (Updated for SP1)

How you deploy Pharos Print Center depends largely on your print environment. This document provides recommendations on deploying your Pharos Print Center components (i.e. Print Center Web and Print Center Services (Pharos API) based on the size of your environment.

TechNote: PopupClient - JAWS Support

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Uniprint 9.0 R2 supports v15 and v16 of the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) for Windows screen reader from Freedom Scientific. The integration with the JAWS Screen Reader allows blind and visually impaired users to manage their own print jobs using the Popup Client. This document provides instructions on how to set up JAWS for Popup Client in Uniprint.

TechNote: Pharos Station - JAWS Support

In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Uniprint supports the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) v14 for Windows screen reader from Freedom Scientific. The integration with the JAWS Screen Reader allows blind and visually impaired users to manage their own print jobs using the Pharos Station.

TechNote: Popup Client (Windows 8 Support)

This document details how the Popup Client and the Informed Print features work on Windows 8. It also includes the steps to update the Popup clients on user workstations to support Windows 8.

Note: All the changes to the Informed Print feature also apply if Popup Client is installed on Windows 2012.

TechNote: Secure Release Service In-Memory SQLite Database

Starting from Uniprint 8.3 Hotfix Revision 411 and Uniprint 8.4, performance enhancement has been added to the Secure Release Service to store a copy of the SQLite job database in memory, providing significant increase in job processing and job information access, and reducing the impact of unrelated environmental issues such as disk I/O pressure.

This document explains the in-memory SQLite database implementation for Uniprint, including backup strategies and related registry settings.

TechNote: User-based Charging

User-based charging enables differential charging based on the user's User Group or if applicable, Third Party Charging. Therefore, you can set up different costs for different users at the Attribute level. For example, you can set up one cost for "Students" color printing and another cost for "Staff" color printing. This document provides you with the instructions for configuring User-based charging in Uniprint.
